What Is Chi for Two® Embodiment Coaching? A Trauma-Informed Path to Authentic Self-Expression
There comes a moment in many people's lives when they realize they can no longer think their way into feeling alive. You may have spent years healing through insight, therapy, books, or spiritual practice. You understand why you react the way you do. You know your attachment style. You recognize your trauma responses. And yet, despite all of this understanding, something still longs to move.
Your body is asking to be included.
This moment is where Chi for Two® Embodiment Coaching begins.
Chi for Two® is a mindful embodiment method originated by Dee Wagner that integrates attachment theory, trauma-sensitive practices, developmental movement, and polyvagal-informed nervous system regulation to support greater vitality, authentic expression, and more fulfilling relationships. Approved by the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA), this approach recognizes that healing is not simply about changing our thoughts—it is about transforming the way we inhabit ourselves.
At the heart of this work is the understanding that our bodies remember. Long before we had language, our nervous systems were learning how to be in relationship. Every smile that welcomed us, every moment of delight, every rupture, every repair, every disappointment, and every experience of being seen—or not seen—shaped the ways we learned to breathe, move, reach, protect ourselves, and express who we are.
These early experiences become embodied patterns. Often, they operate outside our conscious awareness, quietly influencing how much space we take up, how freely we express ourselves, how easily we trust, and how deeply we allow ourselves to connect with others.
Embodiment coaching gently brings these patterns into awareness to create new experiences that allow the nervous system to discover greater freedom. Through forty experiential practices involving breath, movement, sensation, voice, creativity, and relational awareness, the body begins to remember possibilities that may have been unavailable for many years.
One of the most unique aspects of Chi for Two® is that healing happens between two people. Just as our earliest attachment patterns developed through thousands of interactions with caregivers, new relational experiences can reshape those patterns throughout our lives. The attuned relationship between coach and client creates opportunities for therapeutic "redos"—moments in which the nervous system experiences greater safety, support, and connection than it may have known before.
Within this relational dance, something beautiful begins to emerge. Chi for Two® recognizes this emergence as navel radiation—the natural expression of our life force. Every human being is born with an impulse to expand into life, to move, to explore, to create, to express, and to belong. Yet trauma, chronic stress, family systems, and cultural expectations often teach us to inhibit this vitality in order to stay safe. Embodiment coaching is about creating the conditions that allow your original vitality to emerge once again.
The Four Emanations of Embodiment
The Chi for Two® method explores this process through what are known as the Four Emanations of Embodiment. These four developmental pathways offer a map for understanding how our life force naturally organizes and expresses itself throughout the body.
The first emanation, Navel Radiation, is the radiant life force that originates from our center. It is the impulse that inspires us to reach toward what we love, express our needs, create beauty, and participate fully in life. When this natural vitality becomes restricted, we may find ourselves feeling invisible, disconnected from our creativity, hesitant to take up space, or uncertain of our own desires. As navel radiation is supported through embodied practice, many people experience a renewed sense of aliveness, confidence, and purpose.
The second emanation, Contralateral Movement, refers to the developmental movement patterns that cross the body's midline, such as twisting, crawling and walking. These movements organize the nervous system and foster integration between the two hemispheres of the brain. Revisiting these developmental patterns through mindful movement supports awakening of inhibited movement patterns and a fuller expression of our experience.
The third emanation, Gesture, reminds us that before we ever communicated with words, we communicated through movement. Gestures are our efforts to change the dance of relationship. The position of our hands, the expression in our eyes, the quality of our breath, and the movement of our bodies continually reveal something about our inner world. Many of us learned to suppress these natural gestures in order to avoid conflict, disappointment, or rejection. Embodiment coaching invites gesture back into awareness to empower us to shift our relational dynamics.
The fourth emanation, Handling Practices, explores how we can tend to what emerges in us in the relational dance. When our gestures don’t change the dance in the way we hoped for, handling practices support us in tending to ourselves. Depending on the setting and a client's comfort level, these practices may involve supportive touch or non-touch relational experiences that help the body experience grounding, boundaries, support, and safety in new ways. Every practice is collaborative and invitational, honoring the wisdom and autonomy of each person's body.
Embodiment coaching sessions are collaborative, experiential, and deeply respectful of your nervous system's pace. Rather than asking you to perform or achieve, each session invites curiosity. Through movement, breath, sound, creative expression, relational exploration, and embodied awareness, we gently notice where life has become restricted and where new possibilities are waiting to emerge. There is no right way to do this work. Your body leads the process.
As people continue practicing, they often notice subtle yet profound changes. They feel more energized, more emotionally expressive, and more deeply connected to themselves. Creativity begins to flow more naturally. Relationships become more authentic. Boundaries become clearer. There is often a growing trust in one's own inner knowing and a greater willingness to participate fully in life.
I have found this work to be especially meaningful for highly sensitive, creative women and gender non-conforming individuals midlife. This season of life often asks us to release identities that no longer fit and to discover who we are beneath decades of caregiving, achievement, perfectionism, or self-sacrifice. Embodiment coaching offers a way of listening to the body's wisdom as we reclaim the parts of ourselves that have patiently waited beneath adaptation and survival.
Coaching versus Therapy
Although I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina with extensive experience in trauma and eating disorder treatment, Chi for Two® Embodiment Coaching is offered as a separate, non-clinical coaching service. Coaching differs from psychotherapy in important ways. Therapy is designed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions and often focuses on healing the effects of past experiences. Coaching, by contrast, is oriented toward cultivating awareness, expanding embodied choice, and supporting meaningful action in the present. It is a process of growth rather than treatment.
At the heart of Wild Beauty Embodiment Coaching is a simple belief: there is a wise, vibrant, creative part of you that has never been broken. It may have become hidden beneath years of adaptation, but it has never disappeared.
If you are longing to feel more alive in your body, more authentic in your relationships, and more connected to your own inner wisdom, Chi for Two® Embodiment Coaching offers a gentle invitation to come home to the wild beauty that has always lived within you.
